  • New Anti-Spam Measures: A Plea For Patience.

Hail and well met, my little goslings. Just yesterday we updated our forums, with little fanfare and much rejoicing at the office. In doing so, we have added a blog as well.

What that means is more opportunity for spam. We hate spam. It is vile and underhanded and just not any fun. So we initiated new anti-spam procedures, on top of our current moderation system.

Unfortunately, I believe this is leading to a small number of legitimate posts being flagged as false positives. This is bound to happen, and indeed, occasionally happened under the old system. Nonetheless, I apologize to any of you who have had or may have in the future comments or posts that are inappropriately put to moderation. The system, as I understand it, will rapidly learn how things work for us, and will adapt to reduce this kind of thing in the future.

If you have a post go to moderation, I recommend you simply ignore it. Those of you who remember me from years ago will know that I have a tendency to roam the forums even during non-work hours, if I have something to say or an interest in something on the boards, so I'll become aware of it soon and take speedy steps to correct the problem. If a day goes by and it still hasn't been addressed, please us the Contact Us form at the bottom of any forum page.

Thank you again for your understanding, and for being such a great community.

I do not like to wait a few hours so that my
post was moderated and published only in the
evening, even though I wrote it in the morning.
previously this was not. messages are sent at
    the same time.

Volan, I know you are a real person, and even I think your posts look like Spam! It's something about the unusual linebreaks, punctuation, and word choice. Obviously, I know why your posts are like that, and I'm not criticizing you for them! I'm merely saying, yes, I completely know why the filter thought your post was suspicious. However, since we've already marked them as FALSE positives, I don't think you should have further problems. Again, I apologize that you were moderated, and I hope to avoid it in the future.

        BlitFans and New Restrictions.

One further thing has been done! I think this should be more or less the nail in the coffin for the current iteration of spam on the website. Ah, the halcyon days when it was just giant pictures of porn.

We have implemented comment and post moderation, as detailed above. We have removed the primary motivation for new spammers to come and post links, as detailed in the Spammer issues thread, laid out here

Finally, I've created a new primary usergroup, affectionately titled BlitFans. This group will replace the Registered User group for most posters. I've moved all posters who meet the criteria and have been active within the past month into the group already. I've also given a few other privileges to the BlitFans that should help offset the inconvenience involved, including the long awaited 100 by 100 avatar size, more advanced search options, etc. So, you're welcome.

Here's how it will work from now on:

        11.jpg

When you register a new account, you will have to confirm your registration via email. This is unchanged.

Confirmed registrations will go into the Registered Users category. This is unchanged.

Links posted on the forums will no longer affect the Page Rank of the linkee. This is new.

Furthermore, any new user who posts a link will have his post automatically go to the moderation queue. New users who run afoul of the spam filter in other ways will also go to Moderation. This is unchanged.

Registered Users will not be able to post links in their signatures, upload files, give reputation, or leave Visitor Messages. All actions taken by Registered Users will be subject to Human Verification, i.e., reCAPTCHA. THIS IS NEW.

When a Registered User has made a minimum of 5 posts AND has either been registered for 7 days, or has had one of his posts receive reputation, he will be promoted to the BlitFans group upon his next log-in, post, etc. THIS IS NEW.

In conclusion, forum experience should not be adversely effected for current active users. You will, in fact, get a few small new things. New registrations will not enjoy the same privileges that they have in the past, but the period of restricted ability should be minimal. In addition, BlitFans can even help new users avoid the week long wait by giving reputation to legitimate new users, if they so choose. The incentive for spam has been removed, and spammers will not be able to put links in posts or signatures until they have managed to slip 5 legitimate content posts by the community and administrators. I think this is an elegant and effective system.

Brian, aforementioned are really effective solution to curb spammers. I'd like to see those points updated in FAQ/Forum rules section.

That's on my plate for later in the week. Great minds think alike. In point of fact, it might lead to a more detailed overhaul, so it might be a while before I get it done.

Awesome, the new measures sound good. Hopefully they will work as intended without any bugs.
I have one question though, is there any way we can see what group we are in?

cheers, Brian! Now I can write a message and
not to wait for twenty hours of moderation!

Check out the anti-spambot method this site uses: http://www.d3scene.com/forum/register.php If nothing else, it's interesting. I'm not sure if its possible to implement it here though.

                  EDIT:
Actually that site is using vBulletin too so it probably could be implemented here.

Re: New Anti-Spam Measures: A Plea For Patience.

Spot on. If there are no additional verification process, softwares like XRUMER, SENUKE, SCRAPEBOX et cetra can easily automate whole registration process in any forum.
Leaf_It I gave similar suggestions last year to Brian & Ben via PM. Like add simple multiplication/addition/subtraction or reasoning type answers while registering along with captcha & field validation.

                    Here is Brian's reply
I'll do some research to what sort of plugins and products we can use with vBulletin, and talk it over with Ben
. I hope they'll find a solution before the online/network play is implemented in Pocket Tanks.

Thank you or your support gauthamvit2003. And I hope we get better security before We get online play, as well.

Ben doesn't seem to think that KeyCaptcha or other services would significantly impact the number of faux registrations significantly enough to justify placing another barrier in the way of actual people wanting to sign up. I leave such things in his capable and informed hands, but if you have concerns, I'll ask him to address them directly when he has a few minutes.
