How to setup LAN play over the Internet (VPN; Virtual Private Network)

A thread for all of you having trouble, as I've wasted a couple days searching and experimenting.

Nothing like simplicity to save the day!



1) Get Hamachi (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp?lang=en), install, play with the tutorial to get a feel of how it works.


2) Create/Join a network with someone, and try playing with them over your new VPN. This is where I hit trouble; Pocket Tanks wouldn't show hosted games for either myself or my friend.


3) Change network settings! (Even if you don't have trouble, this is still a good idea, as it should speed things up, and/or prevent any problems.)

. . . If you're on Vista, this is a lifesaver (https://forums.hamachi.cc/viewtopic.php?t=18974). (I recommend setting the metric to Automatic, not 10.) Many thanks to ChRoNiC for this simple, visual, step-by-step walkthrough.

Thx for thinking about everyone that has trouble with that, but as WGS said, we already have a TUT for this. Also, could you put a VISTA guide in, cos i can't play on mine:(

EDIT: nice intro, before i just skimed the title and, this has been brought up before, then i read it and, yea, you forgot 1 thing, Pocket Tanks doesn't work on the newest version of hamachi:(:(:(

Actually, I searched these forums first, as I was trying to set Hamachi up specifically *for* VPN play of Pocket Tanks.

Unfortunately, the information I found didn't help, so I went Googling, and decided to post back with the solution to help those who didn't find what they needed here, like myself.
