View Full Version : Total Slump - no end in sight

I can't believe the slump that I've been in the past 2 weeks. A colleague and I have been playing this game for 2 years. We're not immune to the occassional (ok frequent) trash talking and stuff. I'm the one that reads up on these forums and I'm the one that devises new tricks and different angles. We're pretty evenly matched and we alternate choosing first.

These last 2 weeks, I've gone on an insane slump where I've lost 10 games in a row. Just today, I cultivated a 400 point lead only to lose by 200 (830 - 680). Incredible. It seems like the entire game is against me. I know that statistics say I should get breaks half the time but it certainly doesn't seem like it. These last 2 weeks, it seems like every time I get a lead balloon, he's 500 feet above me. Every time I need a straight fire angle of sight he's out of sight. One time, he needed 120 points on a fission (which is practically impossible without a funnel). He got 140. I don't know what the heck it is but I am so thoroughly frustrated that I'm considering hanging it all up for good and acknowledging that he's the better player, as difficult as that is.

10 games in a row is not that ridiculous. You may just have gotten insanely unlucky. Just play some more.

Or dont. Its ultimatly up to you, as the player.

Some time off would help. Stress can make us make quick decisions.

Orrr, he could be the better player.

Yeah, JWL3, you may just be losing your touch. :)

Here is what you do:

1) Learn some really cool combos. Not sure how your settings are but, give me that and a list of 10 weapons like you just chose them at the selection screen and I'll make some good ones just to give some ideas. Try and think outside the box, if you will.

2) At the selection screen, write down every weapon your opponent selects and cross them out as they are used. This will help you keep track of what happened and what is going to happen. You are better prepared for the next attacks if you know what your opponent has left. I mean know what your opponent has not think you know.

3) Make sure that whatever weapons your opponent chooses, you have a counter weapon for it. List some weapons and I can name some counters for them if you like.

4) Don't worry so much about winning. Just try to have fun. A good attitude always goes a long way. If you are down on yourself then most likely you are going to show it in your performance.

I've lost 11 games in a row on Halo 3 on Live before, of course it wasn't all my fault, my team mates were terrible. ;)

Yeah, it also doesn't help that he dances around the office doing a jig each time he wins. It's amazing how a little game can ruin your day. I just need a breather. When you're down and out, you play outside your game and do things you don't normally do which usually results in big mistakes.

Like yesterday's game where I nailed him with a lead balloon on the first shot and he came back to win 830-680. After the hit, he landed an inch away from me and he had 5 direct fire weapons. He also had a bunker buster (remember I made fun of those?) which he used to bring me down to the bottom of the screen and then used his fire in the hole. I had used all my moves on the lead balloon and couldn't drive up on dirt (to minimize the fire in the hole). It was just a really poor sequence of events but that seems to happen much too often in the past week.

Much appreciated. I've tried everything. I even printed out a tangent/cotangent table that helps me calculate the angle I should use to fire off a laser or super laser. Pretty silly because in the end, it still boils down to eyeballing how far he is horizontally and vertically.

Either he got incredibly lucky or he's actually improved his weapons picking because he seems to have an answer for every thing that I've done. (i.e. I take a popcorn, he takes an elevator. I take a turn and burn with direct fire weapons, he takes a breakout.)

Update:

0-5 today. He got 70 points on an aqua bomb while I was on a sloped! surface. In another game, I was up 300 points when he used a breakout to get right above me and use gyro glue to score 300 points. (I mean, c'mon. You can't aim a breakout perfectly and the fact that he landed right on top of me (after having me in a bushwack) and is able to use gyro glue is ridiculous. I mean, it's commendable that he came up with the combination because from a distance, the gyro glue would not have given him anything at all. But seriously, I feel like a deer in the headlights. I'm up a ridiculous number of points and the lead isn't safe. We've been around 50-50 for 2 years and in these last 2 weeks it feels like he put a ****** cheat on the game or something that gives him that extra oomph from his weapons. I'm frustrated and paranoid but I'm going to delete this ****** game and reinstall it.

LOL, see # 3 in my previous post. You have to counter his counter choice.

Also, Breakout, blasts you with the same power every time. Therefore, you can aim it and land where you want. I do it all the time.

And for your own good, I'd not use ---> ****** <--- in posts.

BlitWise and its members wish for the forums here to be available to all people, of various ages, backgrounds, and sensitivities. Therefore, language or behavior which would be inappropriate to use in an intended Family-Friendly environment is therefore not allowed. Foul, offensive, or abusive language is forbidden. This includes the use of swearing, racial, religious, or sex-based slurs, as well as any language designed solely to demean or belittle another poster. Sexual comments and sexual innuendo are also violations of the TOS. Attempting to use words which are forbidden by altering the spelling, or replacing letters with asterisks (*), is also considered a violation. Posts and/or threads found to be in violation may be edited or removed by the Forum Moderator, and the offending poster given a private warning. If a poster shows a pattern of such uncorrected behavior he may have his membership suspended for a given period of time, or, in certain cases, may be banned from the forums entirely.
Yeah, Brian loves them.
Honestly, I don't see a problem with them because it really just leaves the blankness open to the imagination of others. But, it's against the rules so, trash 'em. Plus, if someone abuses that then it would probably get annoying.

I think he means replacing individual letters with asterisks (like just one or two) instead of the whole word. If you censor the whole word, then only extremely censorhorsey people are going to complain.

blissturd
10-20-2008, 02:47 AM
For shizzle, minmay. As for now, we can assume this because it is not specifically mentioned in the rules. Seeing as if the full word is replaced with all letters being asterisks, who really knows if the writer is "attempting to use words which are forbidden"?
We can only assume that it is when using the context of the sentence.

For example, I happen to think "Atdollarsigndollarsign" isnt a offensive comment.

blissturd
10-20-2008, 01:30 PM
Me neither, Rex Nex. I'm like Everlast, where words are just words and it's the attitude behind them that makes them good or bad.

Although, I do agree that all words that would be considered "bad" or inappropriate, are definitely unnecessary. (Rex Nex, "Atdollarsigndollarsign" may not be offensive but, it is definitely unnecessary.)

This is why the rule is in order. It's about having consideration for all forum and non-forum members.

Perhaps you don't know how literal I am.

I literally think At, Dollersign, Dollersign isnt bad.

On urbandictionary.com chatroom, when you write Montenegro, it replaces "negr" with four *'s. And when you hit enter, Monte****o comes out. And Montenegro is just a harmless country.

If you were talking to me, then yes, I do understand how literal you are when you say that. I, too, agree that it is not "bad". I only claimed that is not necessary to get the word, that it normally represents, across.

Basically, since it does matter to the rules committee, then just write "butt" or "hiney".

Breakout doesn't use the same scale as a Turn and Burn right? A turn and burn lands you precisely where you want it to but a Breakout seems much much more powerful and it's hard to control. I usually end up bouncing right back to where I launched.

Anyways, the streak is over in a big way. I won a bunch in a row and we're back to trading games. What's more, I dropped 4200 points on the dude with a spinner glitch. I keep claiming that that's the high score in the 2 years we've been playing. He says he scored 6600 (revised to 6000 after I said that's impossible). There's absolutely no way to score over 6000 with a spinner. I tried different angles and put together a spreadsheet. The best you can do is 5600 or so and this is in Target Practice in ideal conditions. He made up that number just cause he wants to think he's got the highest score ever.

Blissturd says:

Turn and Burn works with your set power while Breakthrough, seemingly, just blasts you the same amount of power every time, like Backfire. And because of this, you can simply aim with your angle setting and fire yourself where ever you want if you get use to how powerful the blast is.

And it's good to hear you got out of your slump. Keep the beatings to a maximum(beating your opponent, that is). :D

HAHA. Sweet.

Curious to know though what the highest point total for a one on one game is vs. human or computer. Gonna post a new topic.
