I like Winamp because I like to listen to internet radio and it does that.

I use to use Windows Media Player when I bought CD's and put them on my computer but now I just listen to internet radio and Windows Media Player doesn't do that. Or I just don't know how it does.

Winamp is easy. You just open it up and click on SHOUTcast Radio and pick what you want to listen to.

Winamp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winamp).

Multiple looks, skins, and colour themes, among other visual features.
Functionality, with keyboard shortcuts that actually make freaking sense.
For example, repeat is set to the frigging R key, rather then ctrl + t.

Winamp is also the best for online radio stations, whether you're tuning in or hosting your own.
ShoutCast ftw.

I'm hoping to get a video game music station going eventually.

The easter eggs are cool, too. :)

I don't use media players. Seriously, I don't. If I listen to music, it's inside of a computer game.

Going to say itunes... I like the UI >.>
If that fails, VLC can play just about any format on the planet, but I'd rather use itunes/quicktime if possible.

I use Windows Media Player Classic. Technically "other", but it's basically WMP 5 with the good bits of later versions thrown in. It's even got extensions for viewing *.mov and *.rm files, which is great for me because I hate Quicktime and RealPlayer.

I'm looking forwards to getting a Windows again. but for now, on this Linux, I just listen to Pandora Radio.

Should have thrown Quick Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quicktime) and Real Player (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_player) on there.
Then "others".

Meh.

Windows Media Player, mainly because it works, you can minimize it and still have access to it via the taskbar and may programs default to WMP when they play a movie after you create it.

Samail
10-17-2008, 07:03 PM
You can minimize Winamp as well. Same idea, except a little icon goes into your system tray, rather than adding a small media player to your taskbar.
The player itself can also be miniaturized to a ridiculous size.

For file types, all you have to do is set Winamp to associate all (or some) file types to it.
Though I'm not sure on Windows Movie Maker.

Xbox Media Center, which is available for Windows, but was originally made for the original Xbox.

Well, the standings are 5, 4, 3, and 2.
Though I doubt a lot of people have actually tried all the possibilities.

I have WMP (comes with Windows, obviously), Winamp for all-purpose use, and Quick Time and Real Player for any weird file types that Winamp doesn't play.

I put other because I like all three! Each player offers its own pros and cons. Windows Media Player allows for quick play. Winamp allows you to expand the player's capabilities like adding new plug-ins. iTunes is great for organizing your music and it makes it easier to find the song you want to play.

Foobar 2000 is the only way to go.

I'm with you... Foobar2000 is Light, Does precisely what it's told to do, and can (with enough work) look rather nice... Although for the most part it looks downright simple(err, ugly to most :))...

Windows Media player is Heavy... Winamp is a Jack of all trades... (And a master of None)... Well, I can't really say that... Winamp knows how to look pretty... Itunes is bulky, and they attempt to force it on Ipod users... Although the store is nice...

There's an even lighter player out there called XMPlay (http://www.un4seen.com/xmplay.html), found at Un4seen Developments (http://www.un4seen.com/). It has some plug-in codes similar to Wimamp's plug-in codes, meaning most Winamp-based plug-ins are compatible with XMPlay. You can play .wma, .mp3, and .wav files. It can even play .mod, .s3m, .mo3, and .it. You can even customize the look of XMPlay with the skins provided on the site.

I got a 2GB PNY flash drive. I'm just throwing that out there. I know it's quite small compared to the other ones out there, but it suits my purposes just fine.

Hi!

Btw... I'm a dialup user too(with a nice download manager, you can download anything... Well, Almost anything..,)... Anyway... Most Players are rather small... Take a look around... You may find one you like... You may not...

I haven't updated this list in a long time...
Some of these are crap, Some don't work, some are for other Operating systems... and Some don't exist anymore...

I've never been a fan of Xmplay... sure it's a great player... I'm just not comfortable with it...

On that other note... I also have a 2GB PNY drive... along with several others... My first was a 128MB Memorex.... still works... USB 1.1 though....

Why can't they just make one type of file for all the differnt things. Like instead of all these different music types, like .wav or .mp3, why can't there just be one? Then we wouldn't need a hundred music players.

Xap
10-23-2008, 03:12 AM
I think it's all about the way they are made, and the different sound they support. A universal audio format would be neat, but I don't know how realistic that would be. Still, I'm certainly not close to being an expert on this sort of thing.

Anyway, I personally like iTunes, just because it has a very easy-to-understand layout, and because when it comes to music I primarily play mp3's. Some people like other audio players better because they can play all sorts of files. For me it all comes down to where I can bring my music, and for some reason there don't seem to be any portable audio players that support anything other than mp3. Why doesn't anyone make one of those? If I had one I probably wouldn't use iTunes, because I wouldn't be focusing on mp3's. I also wouldn't have to go through all the trouble of converting all kinds of music formats into mp3 just for my portable mp3 player, some of which are quite difficult and/or time-consuming to convert.

Mp3's are more compact, thus you can fit more songs.

Samail
10-24-2008, 12:02 AM
I can fit my entire library of Megaman soundtracks, from all the classics, to the X series, to the Zero series, to the etc... onto one CD.
They're all MP3s and MPEG-4s.

biggman15

Most Portable MP3 players support WMA... You can supposedly put double the music on a player that supports it compared to Mp3(400 songs instead of 200)... But I wouldn't suggest transcoding to it...

wildgoosespeeder
10-24-2008, 04:23 AM
Actually you are all wrong when it comes to mp3s compactness. It all depends on bitrate. You can have a mp3 file with a bitrate of 8kbps (crappy sound) to 320kbps (best sound). The standard bitrate is 128kbps (CD quality). 60KB is about one minute with a 8kbps setting, 1MB is about one minute with a 128kbps setting, and 2.2MB is about one minute with a 320kbps setting.

Xap
10-24-2008, 11:16 AM
Yeah, usually your standard mp3 is a few MB.

I'd like to point out how smaller tracker files are - I have a small collection of chiptunes and stuff and the largest one is 12 minutes long, and it's only ~250 kb.

What kind of music files are larger than mp3's?

Everlast
10-24-2008, 06:13 PM
.wav files.

Leon
10-24-2008, 08:04 PM
*.flac files can be, depending on the music. File size usually varies directly with bitrate, but their compression system uses a variable bitrate, opens any the channels as needed, and closes them when done. It's guaranteed to take up less space than a 320 kBps file of the same quality, but its size relative to other qualities varies depending on how well the music was recorded.

Xap
10-24-2008, 08:09 PM
Yeah, but I never use those file types. Ever. I don't even know what a .flac file is. X)

Free Lossless Audio Codec
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flac

It's basicly a CD perfect form of compression... A way to compress the music without actually losing anything... People who consider themselves Audiophiles tend to use it... there hardware tends to cost thousands though... On normal hardware, most people cant tell the difference between Flsc and Mp3..

Although for those that want it on the portable player... there is always the Sansa Fuze... Sandisk recently released a firmware update for the player that allows playback of both Flac and ogg... Hmm.... Now that I think about... it might be the slightly more expensive sansa whose name I can't remember... Not sure...

Meh...
