I don't know... Even with "proof" I'm still kinda skeptical. Mostly because in this picture, (http://www.swmoore.com/images/kthx/ultimate/20.gif) you can't see any transition between the colors at all. In other areas, you can see each individual layer in the shift from one color to another, but that one just seems too smooth to be done by hand.

I decided I'd do a little experimenting with that technique of fading from one color to another. Right now I've just made a few little buttons that shift from darker to lighter, in a few different patterns. I've also been working on some text, in the same style as my sig. Light letters with a dark background are highly useful. The second one isn't as good as the other two I think, but I'm still experimenting with Paint.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1074/buttonsgs8.png (http://imageshack.us)

Later on I'll shift from one color to another, and maybe I can somehow employ this in a drawing. I'm thinking I was probably wrong about that other drawing, because you can't really see the transition in my colors either. It's really subtle, even if you zoom in 8 times.

PhantasyStarHero
11-07-2006, 04:44 AM
I tried doing one of those in paint, and it worked, but man did it take a long time.

BTW, those color fades are called gradients.

Xap
11-07-2006, 08:21 PM
How do you make gradients in paint? >_<

PhantasyStarHero
11-07-2006, 10:48 PM
With a great deal of patience.

You take one color, find it's RGB values, then take another color you want it to blend to and find its RGB values. Then, measure the amount of pixels that you want the gradient to take place. We will label this value X. Next, find the difference between each R, G, and B value between the two colors and record each one as R1, G1, and B1.

Now, divide the RGB1 values by X and you will get more numbers which are essentially RX, GX, and BX.

Now, using the pencil tool, put your first color on one end of your pixel space, and the other color on the other end. It doesn't matter which side you start on for the next step.

For each pixel after the first original, go to custom colors, and either subtract or add the RGB-X values from the number of the previous pixel. Over time, you will see a blending change.

PhantasyStarHero
11-08-2006, 02:29 AM
Yeah, I know. But, keep in mind that all the variables are just there for examples. There is very little algebra involved in this whole thing, but there is a good amount of basic math.
If you are really familiar with paint, it tends to be easier.
Paint Gradients are for more experienced painters.

The blitwise member one indicates you are a member of blitwise's forum, and contribute to their community, then if you want to make it a game userbar, i would make the entire thing different and put the game name, i mean you don't have "tom clancy fan" you have "splinter cell fan" get the point?

Well... My friend IMed me the other night saying he and this other guy are trying to make a game, and they wanted me to make sprites for it. I've come to find out that they're using a game-making program, rather than coding it all themselves, and the program they're using has lots of pre-drawn graphics. It seems I'll be having a smaller role than I realized. But I got excited about it, since I hadn't made any pictures in a good while. I went ahead and drew up some swords, and even came up with a good system of elements to assign to each item (each one has several strengths and weaknesses). Anyway, these are the swords I've drawn so far:

Ice Sword, Fire Sword, and Scissors Sword.
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/245/allswordsho4.png (http://imageshack.us)

And in case anyone's curious, here's the elemental chart I was using. The original idea came from a guy who made up "RPS-15," a Rock-Paper-Scissors game with 15 gestures. Now, I didn't think Paper, Sponge, Human, or Gun would make very good elements for medieval weapons, so I replaced them with Cloud, Cross, Noise, and Laser, in that order. That's why a few of them are of a lower quality than the rest. And yes, I'm aware Ice isn't on the chart. I may replace water with ice if that works.

Those swords are AWESOME!:) :)
I like to draw swords, but not on the computer.

Also, the chart is cool looking (I like the "laser" in particular), but what do the arrows mean? Does the one at the beginning of the arrow beat the other, or the other way around?

TranQ
12-12-2006, 10:22 PM
Dude.... I know paint can be good for somethings but those swords are fwicking sweet! Better than what I can do in Photoshop CS 2 and that's pretty sad for me. Where'd you learn Pixel Art and how to combine colours and stuff? I know it sounds easy but believe me , it can be difficult at sometimes.

Loofiloo
12-13-2006, 02:59 AM
Well... The story of how I got into pixel art is kind of a long one. I basically saw a post in a forum where somebody posted a bunch of tutorials, and after doing LOTS of skimming, I learned the basics, and a few dos and don'ts, then just said "Yeah, I bet I could do this." And I've basically taught myself everything I know. I didn't even get started until May of this year. If I wanted, I bet I could write a tutorial for beginners, since I'm pretty much a beginner myself.

To explain the chart... An arrow pointing from icon A to icon B means that icon A beats icon B. For example, an arrow points from Rock to Fire, so that means Rock beats Fire. I finished the Snake Sword tonight, but I think I'll wait a little while before I post it. It still needs a little work, and I'd like to post more at a time.

Xap
12-13-2006, 10:19 AM
Okay, thanks for explaining.;)
I made a snake sword once on paper. The blade was wavy and the handle was split into two parts that wrapped around each other.:)

Grif392
12-14-2006, 12:09 AM
Lol. My reason for pixel art is much, much simpler-I can't do ANYTHING with the "good" programs. Too many buttons!

Not necessarely a game picture, well not of any Blitwise games, but here is a picture of a Terrorist from Counter-Strike 1.6 ( or Source , which ever ) which I drew in Paint during Math class.... stupid substitutes never look at the artistic ones as much as the bad kids :) You'll never know what they're doing. Loofiloo
12-26-2006, 02:03 AM
Well, I've been pretty busy with the swords lately. I'm more than halfway done. I don't think the newer swords are as good as the first three, but they still have their charms. It was hard to make them effectively convey their element, but still appear threatening. So, in up-down order, here's ice, fire, scissors, snake, noise, tree, wolf, cloud, and air. Now with color backgrounds!

http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/8123/allswords2vq6.png (http://imageshack.us)

It's probably a mistake to show these so early after making them, because I'm SURE I'll go back and make changes to them. =P I'm hardly ever totally satisfied with a picture, especially the first draft.

12-26-2006, 02:41 AM

Loofiloo
12-26-2006, 04:56 AM
My friend said he and this other guy are making a game, and they MIGHT ask me to do a little of the art. He didn't tell me a whole lot at first, so I just jumped right into it making these swords with all these different elements. At first, I thought I'd have a much bigger role in the development. I thought I'd be making ALL the art for the game, rather than just a thing or two (if anything). I've come to find out that I probably won't do much related to that game, so I'm now just making these things for fun.

I also thought they were making it from scratch, but it turns out they're using some kind of "RPG Maker" program, which is why they won't be able to incorporate the system of elements I wanted. =/ If they even finish it, I don't think I'll get any publicity from it. I had all kinds of ideas for it too, like including Littl' Bits characters hidden in the game as a highly obscure easter egg, or inconspicuously incorporating lines from the show in characters' dialogue, or making quests that parallel episodes of the show. =P I could've contributed a lot, but I guess I would need to work with people who can do more programming on their own.

I really wish I knew more people who could make good use of my talent. =/ I need people who can program, or write comics or something, but who can't draw at all.

Kalphite

Yeah maze games are easy to make on flash :)

Loofiloo
12-28-2006, 08:27 AM
The Cloud and Air ones are a tad sloppy, I'll admit. Again, the problem with those was making them a threatening representation of their element. By tomorrow, I should have three more ready to show you. I'm pretty happy with the way the Dragon sword came out, and it shouldn't be too hard to make a threatening Devil Sword.

Oh, and by the way... I decided to remove Cross from the list and replace it with Ice. I think it works pretty well that way.

I don't know if this makes it any more intimidating, but the tree sword is supposed to have a blade made of roots, branches in the middle, and the leaves on the bottom of the hilt.

As for Was it Me?, I'm sure I could make a tileset. That's one thing I haven't tried yet, but hey, I was prepared to do it for my friend's "game." I'm always up for a job.

Everlast
12-28-2006, 12:24 PM
Yeah, I don't really see how a cloud can be deadly unless its a thunder cloud, mabye you can have like a thunder sword. And for the wind/air it looks like you already have a tornado but if you made it darker or more grayish, it might look more deadly. Also the sound one looks OK, but I don't really see how it could be "threatening", it kinda doesn't look like there is a blade there at all...

Loofiloo
12-28-2006, 05:33 PM
I probably will try to make the cloud sword look more like a thunder cloud, but keep in mind that I also have to make a lightning sword, so the two need to be distinct.

Well I'm not going to repost ALL of them, but here's the latest batch: Water Sword, Dragon Sword, and Devil Sword. I think they're pretty good compared to the last few.
