Long, LONG time ago, in age of Galaga-type games, there was a game on my decent 4- or even 2-bit console that owned my mind and ruled totally and I liked it very-very much. I don’t remember its name, even not sure if it has name, as many games of that era didn’t have names at all, but the concept was like this…
You have a space ship that flies through a space tunnel. And there were obstacles on ship’s way, like moving walls, laser turrets, space ship encounters, etc. The order of these obstacles was absolutely random, except that further they became harder to beat: the ship increased its acceleration, the moving obstacles became faster, too, and the enemy ships became tougher. The key features were:
- Just straight route: no curves, no crossroads (tunnel walls may narrow at times, but no REAL turning, just strafing).
- Random obstacles: you never know what appears next.
- Only one obstacle at a time: you must beat your current obstacle (by passing it alive or killing it) to encounter next one.
- No levels, no objectives, just survival: play to beat high score.
There were no weapon upgrades, since many obstacles were environmental: you just maneuvered between moving hazards. But if Blitwise will reincarnate this type of game, weapons and ‘active’ enemies could be a plus. Generally, the better the variation of game elements, the more fun the game will be.
And of course for these who need to be motivated, there could be some sort of missions, while I personally prefer more open-ended games. =)
And yes, it is ‘retro’ game, while colorful graphics will be a plus. =)
