im getting a new laptop soon hopefully (crosses fingures) will be getting a used one, but looking for a faster one than i currently have. i have seen pretty decent alienware laptops on ebay (yeah yeah i know, ebay is shaky, but i have bough a lot of stuff from ebay) and really really want one. but i have seen that alienware laptops aren't that good. they didnt say why though.

in your opinion, if you've owned a laptop before or know much about coputers, whats the laptop brand xD

I had a Dell once... Total Piece of crap.
Alien ware is an excellent brand...
Despite being bought by Dell...
But they still do what they have always done: Make Quality Gaming computers with non-proprietary parts.
Even if they are sometimes... overpriced...

Never buy a laptop on eBay. You never know why they are willing to lose so much money and sell a laptop so cheap.

If you want a high-end computer, it's always cheaper to just build it yourself.

building a laptop is never cheaper.... thats why dell puts cheap @$$ parts and sells them for $400-$600 and make a $300-$400 profit.

i have an IBM computer that was build in 2001.... has never once lost performance and still runs like new, so i recommend IBM who make the ThinkPads laptops.... they come standard with fingerprint security scanners.... but since IBMs are so d*mn good they are a little pricey.... so the next best laptop in my opinion is Toshiba.... they make great affordable laptops, and you can buy them at walmart for about $600 for a decent well built laptop.

stay away from HP, Dell, samsung is alright.... some sony vios overheat to easily (plus are over priced for quality), and compag. <---- bad experiences with all thoes brands

if you don't mind mac operating system then go with apple, they are pretty good too.... and yet still a little over priced.

hope this helps any.

I have 2 Dell laptops, purchased with the no fault in-home repair warranty. My wife dropped the Latitude & broke the LCD display, they came to my house & repaired at no charge. I had 1 problem with the Inspiron's LCD display ribbon cable...again, they came to my house & repaired, no charge. 2 issues in 5 years, 1 our fault. I will be buying a Dell when I am ready for my next laptop...

I'm sure you already have, but buy a corded mouse, because those touch pads are a pain to use.

I would have said something like that, but it's a laptop. It would be like trying to build a TV (I have no clue if that's accurate or not, so if it is, ignore it.)

And no, the touch pads are not fun to deal with. Try playing an FPS with it :P

oh i have a wireless mouse for my current laptop

and i only have at most 700$ to deal with. thats why it must be from ebay.... i know no one trusts stuff from there, but we have bought a lot of stuff from ebay with no problems. and many sellers on ebay are companies that buy laptops, refurbish them, and resell them to make profit. companies sell on it too, not just people.

touch pads, arrrghhh!

hate them, get an optical of some kind.

when I manage to get a laptop (hopefully sometime next year) the optical I'm using right at this very moment is gonna be my no.1 option.
and, yes, I will be doing gaming on this too.

my stepsisters both have dells, and love them.

that said, I plan on shelling out no more than 6 big ones($600) for a hopefully decent rig.

thats the other thing, what do you plan on using it for, what are the things you consider a must have in a laptop, how much do you plan on spending?

be armed with answers to these questions and any others of importance when you go laptop shopping, that is, if you want best results.

Dang... Gameing on a 600$ lappy?
Thats like gaming on a 400$ PC.
It'll be a piece of crap for a gamer.
Unless the only thing you play is Pocket tanks... :)

also remember,
100-200 dollars in the price is just the license for the Operating system.
And If you wait to long, All you'l be able to find are vista laptops.
And vista on a cheap lappy....
Ugghh...
I'm shuddering just thinking about it.

ive seen duo core processor and 2 gb ram equipped laptops that are far from cheap, for $600 dollars and under, no less.

and my current rig can run unreal tournament(the GOTY edition) sans graphics card just fine thank you, so I have no doubts that a laptop can handle gaming just fine.

maybe I'll get the same model of dell laptop my stepsisters both have, they love the things, have had no problems whatsoever.

price on them will probably be down next year, who knows.

oh yeah. buying USED laptops, you can find REALLY good gaming laptops cheap. and if it is a company refurbishing them, they will most likely come with windows vista, which is good because games for PC are starting to be "VISTA ONLY" games...which is another reason im buying a new laptop. if im going to pay $200 to buy windows vista, i will just buy a new computer that comes with it.
and yes, my laptop will most likely be used most for gaming. i plan to go to a gamed design and development college which will of course require a pretty fast laptop/computer to work with. gaming will be the #1 use. also looking for a decent hard drive. for college i will need one. 100gigs isnt too much. good fast video card (sadly, im lost in that field. i have no clue which cards are better than others) and at least 1gig of ram, so that i can upgrade it to 1.5gig with my current ram card (if compatible), a faster processor than my current one (2.8 MHZ pentium 4), and not a necissity, but DVD burner will be nice.
and i know that sounds like a lot and i know 70% of you do not agree with ebay, but just search gaming laptops there and see what you find for $700-
they have some pretty amazing ones. i have decided against alienware, as i have been advised by anyone that has had experience with one, that they break easily. they are shiney and i want one so bad.....but i need something to last. when i get a job, i will build my own laptop >:)

I got a 1250$ PC that I built byself...
And the fps is still noticible in oblivion. (Well when I use my 110 or so odd mods)

As for Video cards, Go with MSI, ATI, Or NVidia.
Make sure you get at least a video card with a 256MB cache though 512 is better. If your willing to spend the cash, you can get a 768MB or 1G if you want though. Also, Chip Quality varies to.

My MSI 8600 Series comes in the GT and GTS Models.
Basicly, The GTS comes with chips tested at the factory to have the highest speed.
I Went with a 256 GTS rather than a 512 GT.
All the companies do this, but use differant names. Any dude in a computer store should be able to point them out for you.
also, a good video card ranges from 180$ to 800$
the 180-250 dollar cards are excelent for mid ranges and SLI PC's (Though your not gonna be able to do SLI in a laptop, so you may want to get an even fancier Video Card)

yeah. gaming laptop is good.

also, i know macs are really good and fast, but its just too much of a pain to find mac supported games.

new question then.
would it be cheaper to buy a new one or just upgrade this one. the one i have is about 3 years old though. it has lasted me much longer than i have ever expected, though the power cord connecter wiggles off the mother-board from time to time and its a $50 fix.

well, i have currently
pentium 4 2.8ghz processor
1.25 gig ram (one 1gig card and a 256mb card)
an ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000/9100 IGP card (dont know how to find its speed)
and a 32gig hard drive

the things that would need upgraded then are probably the hard drive, video card, and processor.

i cannot play the latest games on here without it getting choppy. i have tried Tomb Raider Anniversary on this and it goes so choppy i cannot shoot at a moving target. i upgraded my ram thinking that would solve the problem, but it did not. so it has to be the processor or the video card. and if im spending all that to upgrade, i might as well buy a new one.

i found Fujitsu and Asus laptops to be good...

Was It Me?
12-02-2007, 09:55 PM
Well, I know it's difficult to upgrade most laptops' processors (last time I tried, I had to pretty much take the computer completely apart, and that's not easy to do on a laptop) and nearly impossible to upgrade a laptop video card (unless it has a desktop video card, which almost none do.)

So, I'd normally recommend getting a new computer in your situation.

Don't upgrade, get another one.
Also, Memory has grades to.
Most memory is DDR2, though there is DDR3 on the market for Super-high ends and Video card Caches.
Memory is graded in two ways= Size, and MHrtz.
Stock Memory for a low end is 400 - 533 MHrtz
Other, Better memory comes in at 633 - 800 Mhrtz
I Recomend two gigs of 800 MHrtz.
But on a lappy, that might be pricey. Try to find one of those Single 2 Gig Sticks.
You can actualy tell the difference when you up you memory speed.
Never get your memory at Office Depot or Best Buy.
Get it at Fry's, A local Place, or online. Circuit City ain't to Bad Either.
Also, You'll want a processor of at least 3 giga hertz, A hard drive af at least 100 gigs, (300 gigs aren't to pricey though either.)
If your going to go ATI Radeon, Don't settle for anything less than an X1300 Series. (And Even those are obsolete these days, but I had one, It wasn't bad.)

you need a new computer lol, im stuck with a 1.6 GHz pentium 4 processor >.<

granted i have an ati radeon 9600XT graphix card, 120 GB of HDD space, and 768 MB of ram.... just the ram needs to be updated imo, i need more. i will gladly take your 2.8 GHz processor off your hands ^_^

right now im looking into an AMD athlon 64 X2 6100+ and motherboard combo for $299.... ill start from there and get the ram later when i have more money. for once i want a fast @$$ computer.

all I need is a laptop that does what I want of it, nothing more or less, only what I have need of.

I do alot of 2d graphical work, and fps gaming(nothing newer than unreal tournament GOTY) is mostly for stress relief, put simply, nothing feels better after a stressful day than loading the infiltration mod and setting off a few claymores, lol.

I usually load up pocket tanks for real fun(I keep the FPS gaming for particularly stressful days)
