Very much agreed. One of my friends had a really bad time attempting to uninstall norton. His internet provider included their own antivirus/firewall with their service, but because Norton wasn't in total control of the computer's internet connection, it decided to shut it off in 10-minute intervals. Let me find that thread, and then I'll post it.

Alright, I was going to transcribe it by hand, but it's too long. I'll be posting .pdf files of that thread.

GRAH! What kind of attachment limit is 19.5 kb!? *shakes fist*
Fine, hosting stuff on filefront.
Hosted on Filefront. (http://files.filefront.com/Norton+Threadzip/;8812641;/fileinfo.html)
The file is 500 kb, and it's a .zip with 3 .pdf documents inside.

My favorite error was a computer from 2000 with Win XP installed on it. It is crap at this day and age, plus its been abused by all the Business Shop students. Most of the same kind run fine in that class, and they are all the same. However, I booted up, logged on and it was going painfully slow. After fifteen minutes, I was almost logged on. After 30, I was logged on. I then got an error message saying "explorer.exe is corrupted." Sorry, don't have a screen.

No worries, I know you have to open image editing to save screen shots for windows. I think this is a rather humorous screenshot...

Nothing to do with norton, but still... a tribute to how you can mess up your web browsing capabilities.

what the fezz???

real convoluted screen there.

on the subject of norton, friend of mine with an XP pro equipped laptop tried to uninstall Norton, and it took his windows installation down with it, took him the better part of 3 weeks to hunt down drivers and whatnot, and he still has the occasional odd glitch, i think he somedays, honestly wants to take the laptop and the box with the norton crap down to the army target range, and well, you get the general idea here, I presume?

That reminded me of something funny last week. My family and I were coming back from a restaraunt and we drove by a cheap motel, and guess what kind of person was standing next to the building! A pimp! And I don't mean like "that guy is so pimpin", I mean, he was a real pimp. He had the coat, the hat with the feather, about the only thing he didn't have was a pimpmobile. I think he was waiting on his girls because he kept looking around the corner at the motel rooms. But yeah that was wierd, never thought I would ever see a real pimp.

Its just I don't like having more than one internet window up at the same time. Firefox does that for me. Tabs. Its genius. Everything opens in a tab. Sure, IE7 has tabs but you have to middle click all the time. You can click on an external link in IE7 and it will open in a new window.

Rex Nex
10-17-2007, 08:14 PM
Its that inconviniant to middle click? Takes what, .3 of a second?

blue_moon
10-17-2007, 08:22 PM
No, its just I don't know what links open up in new windows and which don't. So middle clicking everything would make me have thousands of tabs. Plus, you can't middle click links in flash.

No thank you. Firefox pwns. End of story.
That reminds of one week ago. I just got the mod tools for an online game called slime online. Everything on the internet was slow. When I tried to upon Firefox again, it would take forever. Turned out a file was corrupted. I uninstalled FF and went back to IE. I couldn't take the punishment, and I installed FF again.

Firefox IS the Shiz, roughly speaking.

XRaiderV1
10-18-2007, 05:49 AM
customization is seriously outta hand in firefox, exerything from skins, themes, add-ons, and plug-ins, and a thousand times more secure than even IE7, which, far as I can tell, still has enough security holes in it to drive a dump truck through, several, actually, side by side, no less.

fire fox indeed does pwn, in the world of the internet browser, Firefox is king.

cause, something tells me the answer to that is no.

blue_moon
10-18-2007, 03:37 PM
Yes, but keep in mind that the users of these 60 or so computers are girls with no knowledge of the computer set aside the Microsoft office suite. The kids who can defrag a computer correctly are in CS/IT (computer science/internet tech.).

Oh... Please elaborate. Aside from the security being set to off after downloading a tool bar, I see none. I am defending IE because it is very decent, I just hate when something is said with no fact behind it (like a Mac ad saying Windows can't make movies, and when it does, they look ugly). I'm not saying your are making stuff up, but I just want to make sure you aren't

XRaiderV1

simply by installing a couple plug-ins, one can get just about all the functionality of IE, but without the security holes.

and the vast majority of software I use, and most of the sites I visit load just fine in firefox.

whoever says differently either is ignorant of change, or just plain hasnt even tried firefox.

have them at least try it, post their opinions here, and, if they still dont like it, its simple enough to go back to IE.

Rex Nex

10-19-2007, 03:14 AM
Oh come on. Firefox is great because of how you can customize it and its reputation for security, but the internet is still the internet. For the most part, firefox and internet explorer handle web pages exactly the same. I have never found a page that won't load in IE (Before I went to Mac that is). Can't speak for security because I'm not much in the way of web development or security.

rex nex, bring me an example of something that your folks say will only function on IE, I will either find a way to make it work in fire fox, find something just as effective, if not better, or say i cant, and you can call me a brainless noob if i fail.

try how at one point, not even 15 minutes after a fresh windows install, while trying to get firefox, i kpet getting pop up after pop up, and then avg started screaming its fool head off, and I had the security settings at their highest.

this was 1 year ago, while I still had dialup, no less.

obviously, I havent touched internet explorer since.

Pyrobellum

Rex Nex, it's true: I have encountered exactly 2 pages in about 2 years of web browsing that firefox will not load, and those were both flash-packed pages from starcraft2.com. If you parents think it won't work on firefox, they don't know much about the internet.

XRaiderV1
10-19-2007, 05:13 PM
no offense rex nex, but I agree with my esteemed colleague on this one

blue_moon
10-19-2007, 06:45 PM
Um... What security holes does IE 7 have? I have not noticed one. In fact, IE does have the bar that says when something is trying to download or when there's a pop-up. All the pop-ups I get actually are with fire fox. I still like FF better by the tabbing.

XRaiderV1
10-19-2007, 08:21 PM
try simply by browsing, all kinds of things slip in past the safety systems, or lack there of with regards to IE.

also, ever see IE get corrupted? almost impossible to fix, short of a full reinstall, Fire fox does not suffer from this, because its not ntegrated into windows the way IE is, simple uninstall/reinstall usually fixes any problems associated with doing something dumb in firefox.

at least in my experience, anyway.

blue_moon
10-19-2007, 08:27 PM
Thats my only other complaint about IE. Once, it got corrupted and the computer would freeze randomly. We reinstalled IE 7, and the computer was fine. I admit, there were some pop ups with IE, but not much. Exactly what slips by in IE7?

Here's one thing bad about FF, it loads png's slowly. And, it loads them every time it needs to, unlike IE which saves them to a temp folder.

Ugh, lost my post when I closed my computer. Curses on protected college networks! >.<
Anyways, I'm not willing to collect links again, but a quick google search seems to think there's a lot of security holes (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=IE7+Security+holes&btnG=Google+Search).
Speaking of security, it would really be a good idea to download NoScript (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722) if you have firefox. It blocks scripts by default until you whitelist the domain site. Most sites have exactly zero problem running without their scripts. To quote one guy, "It makes you wonder what those scripts were doing if they weren't integral to the functioning of the website." For the most part, it's stuff like googleanalytics.com, but it never hurts.

blue_moon
10-19-2007, 09:21 PM
The only two security holes are drive by viruses, which I believe can be received by FF too, and some mhtml which isn't that much of a security hole.

XRaiderV1
10-19-2007, 09:27 PM

trojans, spyware, fezzing adware, no content filters period, I mean, who wants to see smut(polite way of saying it) when they're searching, for, say, battlestar galactica pics?

better yet, who wants a xxx-insert name here- popup tracker coming up when trying to post to gamefaqs, for example?

not to mention that it takes very little for IE to randomly change its start page, unless locked down through spybot.

just one IE session on my stepsister's old tower was enough to yeild over 2000 pieces of a mix of adware, spyware, and a few malware entries thrown in for good measure.

Dude, I've been using IE for about 2 years, and NEVER experienced any of that. I mean, some pop-ups do get through, but not many. Just as many as FF. Try going to imageshack and refreshing the page a few times :). They fixed all that stuff in IE7.

XRaiderV1
10-19-2007, 09:37 PM
image shack has pop-ups up the yin yang, at least it did until I installed the ad-block plus plug in for fire fox, not quite sure how that fixed things, but it did.

Yes, there are many Mac viruses. However, most viruses are downloaded from game websites that offer ROMs, ROM hacking tools, free games, torrents or keygens. Then, those would be transfered by spreading the file, by email, and IM. Oh, and find a good GBA Emulator for the Mac.

I was a PC only user for a long time (a decent bit longer than you have been alive Rex :P ) and I recently got a Mac (a little over a year ago). I have (and use) both, although mostly my Mac if I can help it. I pretty much use my PC just for games nowadays.

I like my Mac far far better than my PC. Someone else may like PCs just as much as I like Macs. It's all preference. It's just my opinion that I like Macs, and I'm not trying to persuade (or dissuade) anyone in either direction. There are valid reasons for preferring either one.

The only Mac software deficiency I've found is games and there's definitely a lack of those (although I'm starting to see that change a little bit, I think).

"That's all I have to say about that." ;)
