Brian
04-27-2007, 04:22 PM
Visit the Weapons Depot (http://www.blitwise.com/ptanksdepot.html) to get Tornado Pack today! Remember, as I said elsewhere, this expansion pack requires you have v1.20 of Pocket Tanks Deluxe to work! You can email me at techsupport@blitwise.com with the name and email address used to order Deluxe to get the latest version. Please be patient with turnaround, as I anticipate a flood of emails. :) Emails are usually responded to within one business day, and I will also be answering emails tomorrow as well to help as many of you out as quickly as possible.

Also, you can download Fuzz Pack (http://www.blitwise.com/ptfuzz.exe) now for free. It is compatible with v1.00b and newer.

Almost 8 months with NO activity on ctspgames.com!
No Neon Wars, no new Pocket Tanks, no weapon packs. There are so many people that I personally know that want to buy the updated Mac version of the game with the new weapon packs!

I am starting to fear that Mac fans will never see the new game... I have sent several emails to Mike at CTSP with no reply.

I'm caught between a rock and a boulder too, as I love the new weapons packs, but am less than fond of version 1.2. Why they deviated from the proven forumula of 1.00b is beyond me. Sure, 1.00b needed to be improved....AI aiming, movement, strategy etc. But those wholly horrible scoring cheats and handicapper make the game feel like a cheap, dumbed down, why bother, newb fest at times. Alienating the inner core, die hard true fan base of this game in favor of dazzling newbs for a few games till they catch on to the abrasive level of artificiality in the gaming experience is not wise, BlitWise even, in my view. Tell me, whose gonna want to keep buying weapons packs for a game that's hacked up with obvious CPU cheats rather than simple and impressive AI improvements? I'll tell you who, those hapless enough to assume they'll work with a better, earlier version....(like me) Fool me once....

They were so close with 1.00B! A few tweaks and genuinely creative AI strategy improvements would have put it over the top! I know I can't be in the minority of die hard PT fans who would much rather have no scoring cheats and a real gaming experience than the palling compromises as of late.

I hope that the networked version truly is nearing final developement....it alone can now make up for what's happening to PT.

It's my last best hope to rekindle a once sublime addiction.

Not 30 minutes after posting the above, PT began exhibiting interesting AI characteristics....what gives? Why so few and far between does the CPU act so, so human? I have seen the PT AI engine do some amazing things on very, very rare occasions. Why can't we ditch the scoring, aiming cheats and get these strategy gems on the main stage? A few moments ago, for the first time in 50 games on the new version 1.2, the CPU vectored a digger at 75 degree vertical incline away from my direction.

I hope the PT team can see the advantage of focussing more on mimicking human response rather than blatant scoring and aiming cheats.

Of course, good network play will render my ranting mooter than a.....well......MOOT!

Can't handle the cpu-10? :p

Just joking. I like playing against a "stacked" opponent; it'll only help you get better.

blue_moon
05-01-2007, 07:02 PM
I am beginning to think the whole randomness issue was entirely in our heads as of now. Don't take that as an insult (anyone), but I think we are so used to seeing a repetition of weapons that now it is actually just being projected as so. I made a flow chart of 20 games (I didn't play them) and I didn't get the same weapon more than 3 times. I didn't get a few, but that's randomness for you.

LOL....I read ya.

Stacked with good response options employed with a modicum of reliable AI is worth rising to the occasion. A worthy and engaging challenge.

However, handicapping via scoring and aiming cheats takes the fun out of wins AND losses. Really robs the appeal. Kind of like anyone over the age of 5 who still likes playing Tic Tac Toe.

It shouldn't take too many real gaming examples to plug the statistically appropriate response options in many a given situation, into the code. Would certainly do alot for playability.

But hey, online release should cure the prob.

TS

Techstuf
05-01-2007, 07:12 PM
That is a plus BM, randomness to weapon selection has been virtually restored. I do notice that there seems to be a bit more redundancy than ver. 1.00B. As in more instances of 3 or 4 of the same weapon showing up in a random pick.

TS

blue_moon
05-01-2007, 07:20 PM
Really? In V1.2? I have yet to experience triplicates, and i noly got a dulpicate once while I was paying attention. But hey, randomness is random, and by that, I mean it could churn up anything, even a complete batch of Superstars. However, getting the same pick every game is different... That would be bad. That was fixed, as far as I know. As in the a bit more redundancy than ver. 1.00B
doesn't that mean that it is repeating more than V1.2? You said in the beginning that randomness was restored. Anyway, thats it. For me, randomness is not a problem and I don't really care if it was. I like Tractor Beam...

Techstuf
05-01-2007, 07:34 PM
Well, there are PT fans and there are PT fanatics.

I too like tractor beam, on that rare occasion when pulling the CPU or myself out from under a Mud Pie doesn't get me runned, gunned or stampeded.

I do know what you mean, though. Instead of ramming perfect shots down our throats every volley, the cpu needs to form offensive/defensive strategies like shooting walls in front of tanks not on top of them. :D

Techstuf
05-01-2007, 08:30 PM
I agree! There is a host of simple and effective strategies to be employed which could liven the game considerably without need of that thefty handicrapper.

TS

blue_moon
05-01-2007, 08:51 PM
Well, that is way easier said than done. Its basically an AI with the capability to learn. It would also need a priority list of each combo known to man, because it obviously wouldn't be able to make its own. The compiliation of that list would extend forever, I could say that there are over 1000 strategies known to me, plus there are the smaller ones that we may think "lets see, if I use scorcher the island, I'll get less points than island then scorcher, but I could use tractor beam before..." Its all subjective and as far as I know, near impossible to code. It would be a major update, which would take years.

Techstuf
05-01-2007, 09:19 PM
No need for a fancified adaptive fuzzy logic AI....all I'm asking for are a few pre programmed common sense response options for even the most general of scenarios. For instance, programming the CPU to point and shoot Xrays correctly was appreciated. And, I'm guessing, an unformidable task. Give us a couple of dozen of those kinds of logical decisions, unplug the handicrapper and a genuine upgrade is born.

Its all subjective and as far as I know

I am, somewhat regrettably, in no position to disagree

TS

blue_moon
05-01-2007, 09:31 PM
Ahh... I thought you meant to program actual strategies that we use, but more along the lines of "I could get a clear shot this way if Flak isn't there, but I am shooting anyways" kind of logic. I don't think they count for wind either, or not well. I played a game on the new version with wind and the CPU shot a shot and it wne tbackwards and hit a wall.

What are you [Techstuf] talking about? (not aggressively in any way). The only differences I see between this AI and the one from 1.00β are that the AI now moves when in a difficult position to fire and that it fires line-of-sight and digging weapons correctly. Are there any changes besides those that I'm unaware of?

Do you [Techstuf] mean, as Demyx said, that the computer has a tendency to perfectly shoot through Flak? I've seen that tons of times before in 1.00β...

By the way, you [Techstuf] should write poetry or something. That sort of language seems alien on a forum (no offense in any way to anybody)...

Techstuf, (I need to be careful typing your name, lest I make a rather rude mistake) I understand that Mike hasn't given the same level of attention to the AI as many players would have wanted. The problem, really, is a simple one: he never expected people would be playing against the computer. He put it in as a last minute concession to one person play when a second person wasn't available. Thus, AI has never been foremost on his mind when considering Pocket Tanks. One could say, therefore, that network play is always where he has wanted to take the game. Indeed, the rough beast of netplay is slouching toward this Bethlehem. It's hour has not come, but it grows closer.
