Ok, I am a fan/player of old Dooms, Doom 3 did not even compare to the old ones. They are a classic FPS, (First person shooter) in which you fight minions from, well for family friendlutide "Down Below". Hordes of them are on each level. At the time the game was made, the AI in this game was superb. It was one of the first games to have the AI react to noise and the inviroment. The AI was also superb becouse of its diversity. There are about 1/2, mabey 2 dozen different enemys, but where this shines is were and how strategicly they are placed. There are demonic humans, imps, walking mechanised spiders, cyber demons, and everything inbetween.

The sounds in the game are some of the best old-game music I have ever heard. No more rings and the same exact "boom" for every gun, this one had sound diversity also. From the occasional "elevator" music to the more common rock and roll, this game had it all.

The guns used to destroy the enemys were anough to keep you playing forever. The pistol is the first weapon you obtain, not including your fists. It is weak, but with a fast reload and some room for skill with it, it can be used deadly against the lower minions. The shotgun is a classic, and everyone can guess of the slower reload time, wide spread, high damage charectoristics of it. One of the last weapons is the BFG uhh, 9000 is it? Anyway for family friendly perposes I cannot tell what BFG stands for, with a little thinking you can come with it.

Ahh, here is another classic aspect of Doom, the graphics. Low and bad by todays standereds, awsome by yesterdays. The look of the levels gave a either "Im freaked out man" aspect or the "Ok, you are all going down!" aspect. The water looked like blue shiny grass, the poison looked like green water. Nothing super special, but to me the graphics=classic.
Nothing makes your day like a blood-inducing crushing ceiling, or a key over a poison filled room. The obstecles of Doom can be either simply simple to annoyingly hard. Other obsticles include floors that drop into lava 5, mabey 6 seconds after a switch is pulled. The game truly shows it classicness here also.

Yep. Doom was truly awesome.:)
I like those old FPS games (such as Doom, Marathon, Half Life, and Quake) better than most shooting games of the same "genre" these days.

Half-life is old now?

Kids today. ;_; I feel old.

Quake 3 is my favourite. Otherwise I don't really like those shooting game things...

Half-life is old now?
Well, it's almost 10 years old now, and most other games these days have supposedly "outgraphiced"(to make up a word) them. A game feels old to me when it's a game that I used to (try to) play on my dad's work computer as a small child.;)

Meh, I like Starsiege: Tribes, which was made in 1998, but otherwise I don't like those old FPSs, particularly because I generally wasn't allowed to play them when I was a little kid, for some reason...

Hey Rex, out of this list, which have you completed?
(Listed in proper order of playing)

1. The Ultimate DOOM

2. DOOM II: Hell on Earth

3. Final DOOM, which consists of:
3a. Evilution
3b. The Plutonia Experiment

4. DOOM 64

5. DOOM 3

6. DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil

DOOM 3 is a remake of the first game, and Resurrection of Evil takes place in between 1 and 2. So I guess you could call it DOOM 1.5. :) Perhaps Resurrection should be played after the first one.
DOOM 64 is the final game as far as story line goes.

So far, according to the numbers provided above, I've completed 1, 2, and 3a on the hardest difficulty, Ultra-Violence. Well, the absolute hardest is Nightmare, but it doesn't really count due to some... extra features.

this doom mod kicks so many kinds of butt that it aint funny.

its a reworking/mod of Doom 2, incomplete, but seriously fun, consisting of complete level mods, weapon skin mods, sound mods, the works, and very fun and challenging.

past experience with regards to level layouts is almost completely worthless, so its a new experience.

have fun!

Anybody ever play Rise of the Triad? It's got some graphical and gameplay similarities to Doom, but it's about killing evil Nazi cultists. Highly recommended for anyone whose operating system can run DOS games.

Sounds like wolfenstein or wolfendoom.

I tried playing the Sharware of Wolfenstein. Cripes. I'm used to strafing with the keys, not the mouse. (Not that the mouse works anyway. I'm not sure why.)

GOD Samail GIVE ME SOME TIPS! I CANT @#Q#!@# STRAFE!

Samail

I don't understand at all what the problem is...

Well, I set my strafe keys to < and >. < goes <, and yeah...

Then you press those keys when you need to strafe.

If you setup program is a DOS-looking one, they call strafing moving. Turn leftis different from move left. Turn means... to turn. And move means to walk side-ways.

Not strafing makes the game 10 times harder, so learn it well!
(Though cyberdemons are way too easy for me now, so I strafe the old fashioned way now and then.)

Hmm... Ill try that tomarrow.. is any other keys of yours out of the ordinary?

I try to strafe with the mouse... but it locks your position (Like if you try to turn when chainsawing a enemy, so it isnt really worth it...

yes, i use the left and right arrow keys because i never could get my mouse settings properly configured for strafing.

alos, enable mouselook, and turn off auto aim, plays much much better with mouselook enabled, this also takes care of your set up for turning, freeing up keys that would otherwise be mapped to other functions.

my mouse is set up to handle forward movement, main fire, and jumping, though im considering remapping my jump key to Rctrl

my map is set up for overlay only, like a heads up map, if you will.

got zdoom as my port of choice, legacy runs funny on my 4gb main drive.

and each time i flip a switch, not only do i trigger a door or wall to open, this also triggers other walls to slide open, releasing a flood of badguys.

the lost souls look sick in this mod too.

also, like i said, theres bits and pieces here and there that arent complete yet. nothing map related, far as i can tell.

Well it depends on what post, if any. That will affect your config.

Mines at ZDooms Default, I dont use aim, look, or jump. Im old fashioned.

Samail

Well I completed Ultimate DOOM and DOOM II the normal way, without a port. Final DOOM, though, is just ridiculous. It requires a Y axis. I never jump, though. That's just unfair. It can also mess a level up if you go somewhere you're not supposed to be yet.

@XRaiderV1: Ah, now I remember what they're called. That Free DOOM thing, it's a TC. Total Conversion. meaning that the game's enemies, walls, sectors, weapons, sounds, music, everything is altered.

XRaiderV1
09-24-2007, 06:48 AM
you know of any other Doom TC games?

How do you have your hands positioned? I dont quite have the length needed to have my fingers both on the < and > keys and the up down, left, and right keys. What do you use your mouse for? Do you use CTRL or click to shoot? Do you use the keyboard or mouse to turn?
